Costello makes the move from karts to cars in 2023

February 3, 2023 – Continuing to balloon their driver lineup for the 2023 season, Jay Howard Driver Development (JHDD) has added top-level karter Michael Costello to their program. Set to make his series debut in March in the F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda, Costello has already completed a test with the Indianapolis-based program as he prepares for his first season in open-wheel competition. 

“Michael joined us at the recent Series Test at NOLA Motorsports Park and was immediately on pace,” expressed Jay Howard. “Coming from the top tiers of karting, Michael was consistent and correct with his feedback and took the information that we supplied off track to put it to good use on the track. I am confident that he will grow throughout the season, and we look forward to watching his success.”

“I am very excited to join Jay Howard Driver Development for the 2023 F4 Championship,” explained Michael Costello. “We are looking forward to following in Lochie Hughes’ footsteps with the team. Given my pace at the season test at NOLA I really believe we can challenge for some wins and the championship this year.”

A front runner in the ROK Cup USA and Superkarts! USA programs, Costello has been honing his skills at the top level of karting throughout North America. A multi-time race winner and perennial front-runner, Howard is hoping Michael can continue that progression in big car racing.

Howard added, “It was great that Michael was able to get in the car before making their final decision but also, he will have several more days of testing prior to the first green flag. Taking advantage of our driver coaching, knowledge, and experience will help Michael fast-track to where he needs to be to start the season.”

With the first event of the 2023 season taking the green flag in just over one month’s time, Costello and the rest of the Jay Howard Driver Development effort will continue testing through February to prepare for the season. The 2023 F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda season will kick off over the March 9-12 weekend at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans, Louisiana.
